The Greyhound Adoption Program here in Victoria will not rehome any greyhounds exhibiting high predatory behaviour towards small dogs, or aggression towards people.

I managed to foster some greyhounds who were like this towards my little dogs and my cats. I let the cats box them round the greyhound's noses who wouldn't take no for an answer. Last I heard when they were homed they never touched another cat since-in fact they got friendly with them.
As with my little dogs, they had their I'm boss so behave and after the greyhounds settled down, they slept and played together.
There was one who stood out- colditz, but most of the time she was great with the dogs, until she got a mood and wanted a street fight with them. Gawd I miss her I do.
She was great with cats.

We conduct our initial temperament test PRIOR to accepting a greyhound onto our waiting list. There is little point in having a trainer wait for weeks, months, only to find out that we will not take the dog. By doing this, we do not ttake on the responsibility of having to pts any of them.

We are an all volunteer rehoming group, we have a behaviourist on call if a problem arises, however we will instantly fail a greyhound that shows high prey drive to one of our test dogs during the initial temp test.

Getting 10 - 20 or more calls a week to take in greyhounds, why on earth would we take on one problem/aggresive dog that would take huge resources, long term foster care and dollers, when there could be 5 or 6 lovely cat friendly dogs that could take its place?

We rehome because we love greyhounds, and have some wonderful trainers that work with us and helo us, but the bottom line is - we fund it, so we make the decisions..lol

Sorry Kyleigh, that wasn't clear to me from the postings. I wasn't addressing Jenni, just trying to ask people from greyhound adoption groups to reconsider their judgments if this is what they do, and to show that there are ways of doing it differently. But then I am from an all-volunteer independent rehoming programme in NZ and we have a very small budget but no quotas to worry about. Maybe this affects the choices these groups make?
I would also love to hear from other people and rehoming groups who do put time into socialisation and training, and how successful they have been. I find it does take time, and some need more responsible homes (e.g best with no cats, especially if there are children around, that sort of thing). One I am fostering at the moment would have been put down, but she is very responsive to training, loves food and wants to please, and is coming along very well and lives with 5 five dogs happily. If I had a responsible person who lived alone with a calm cat then I believe she could also be cat-trained. However, finding the right home is always the issue, I know.
We also have run general and specific training sessions for our adopters and have an introductory DVD for people to borrow to learn about dog behavior, as well as the usual library.

Hi Jo,Is there any chance you could send one of your DVDs to me?

I am in QLD+i have specified in my will my house dogs+all g-hounds in my name will be rehomed.

When i am gone who is going to make sure my best mates are looked after?

Thanks, Truck

I have friends that also re home them and they do the same, that's why the figures are so high, it's just sad that we can't get more people like you Ann, you guys are angels for these dogs, I think every trainer in Australia wholehearted supports and respects all of you who take our dogs

no if i did they would be thrown in with the greyhounds for trying to eat the native birds we have here on the property.
i hate cats
and cat owners should keep the miserable dirty things inside there houses.
when i lived in a town they were always out killing native birds and shitting on peoples verhandas

as i said before pet owners should look after there pets and keep them contained

Q. how do u stop a greyhound from being impregnated?
A. put in in a seperate yard or kennel
Q. how do u stop a cat from getting impregnated?
A. put in in a cage or seperate room
Q. how do you stop your child getting pregnant?
A. get the pill or rod in the arm (bet u dont mutilate there genitals)

all three of these can be used on any pet/person
there are anti pregnancy pills for animals , there are abortion pills for pets too and we all have doors in our houses and its easy to buy a cage
lol

thanks i agree with you 100 %
definatly not vegitarian.
the food chain shouldnt be altered in my veiw.
and yes i love animals and they are treated equily

im just waiting for a cow to shoot me yet lol jokes

but yes im very much against altering an animal just for pure lazyness on our part to look after them.

and i believe that the food chain is there for a reason and animal liberators have damaged it enough

greys cant even catch there dinner anymore
next thing they will ban tigers from hunting antelope lol

-wayno

Wayne, I think you just answered the question "dangerous Greyhound" Our children show agression? We teach them Not to do it! To me it is no different than parenting, we teach our children right from wrong, and as responsable trainers or pet owners we should teach our animals right from wrong! very simple really! My licence has the word Trainer on it, my guess is that it is on there for a reason!

i know the procedure but its so much easyer not to and to just keep animals seperated

what if temlee , token prince ,brett lee was addopted and desexed and than 6 months later you wanted to use them to breed with
