Andrew, He is 4 and a half and has his problems so I think you would be better off homing him as a pet only, rather than someone else taking him on trying to race him, things not working out and once again he may be passed onto someone else.
Best direction I can point you in is Romfords Home Finders EXTERNAL LINK who do an excellent job finding ex racers homes.

Andrew, if you get in touch with the RGT Head Office 020 8335 3016 and they will put you in contact with local branches.
Also, I would advise you to ring round any specialist greyhound charities in your area and put him on there waiting list too.
Good luck with the fella - he deserves to put his feet up now

Hi, I have waited months to rehome a dog last yr with the retired trust and just couldnt afford it any longer so I put any advert in my local paper in pet section and with one day of advert I had 13 potential owners, I chose the nicest couple visited there home to see if it was suitable and a yr later I still see him happy dog. Maybe try this option

Good idea Alex.

I had a bitch that needed to go to a home too a month back, I put a ad in the paper and it worked too , its a good idea, however you will get a few scratchers calling.

Just gotta make sure they go to a good home, and when they do let go, my girl went to a nice family and I spoke to 3 or 4 people first before I made my decision. :)

Its amazing how many people do want them as pets that you wouldnt think about.

Cheers

Tor

dont dogs here have to go through the gap program, or its equivelent in other states, to be rehomed ,

they are asesed to see their suitability etc , they are then desexed before rehomed and are allowed out without muzzles etc

giving greyhounds away to just anyone that are not desexed, is a reciepe for disaster , they are used to crossbreed with other hunting dogs , and even them selves are used for hunting pigs/roos/ etc

Not if they dont race they dont have to.

If they do and you put them through the green collar program yourself assuming they pass( $49 aussie) they can go to good homes.

Ok you cant guarantee they will always be good homes if you give them away, need to use some judgment however you cant guarantee the ones that go to gap cant be passed on neer do wells either.

Have to have faith in the people the grey goes to and get them desexed first for sure.

We need a retirement home for the dogs that dont make it through the organisations in every country though thats for sure, funded by the tab or similar in every country that bets on greys.

The only problem with re-homing the dogs yourself is that if the new owners circumstances change and they can no longer keep the dog, be it 1/2/3 years down the line they will want to return it to you.
This is why using reputable greyhound charities is both invaluable to the dog and the owner.

What must be remembered when rehoming a dog via the RGT or other rehoming charities is that the money / donation to them is basically used to cover neutering & dental work ( if needed ) ; these places don't do it to make a profit and some charities actually rely on public donations to survive and without them who knows what would happen to many of the hounds ? I'm glad your fella found a suitable home and only wish many more did so too.

Hi everyone
Douglas is bang on the money!
we work hand in hand with our rehomoing organisation and due to their incredible eforts this year over one hundred hounds have found their forever homes! what makes it great is that of the twenty greys that we have in our care at the moment the longest stay "resident" is only a few weeks.
only last week eight big black boys arrived and as we all know these guys are the hardest to find homes for,but the good news is that one has already been chosen!!
if you have got a minute why not check out our website EXTERNAL LINK regards jeff
