Over the years I have had 8 greyhounds, all pets after they retired. My first two were from an RGT rescue, the others and my current four were from pounds on death row.

They are a wonderful breed but public perception is poor. I can easily walk all four of my dogs on lead, completely under my control, but people still cross the road, or pick their dogs up, when they see me coming.

My dogs love to run and chase, but I do think there are too many of them. If breeding was not allowed until the number left waiting for homes was manageable would this solve the problem of overbreeding or just drive more to an early death?

In the UK the racing/betting industry has such a bad reputation for exploiting the dogs it is hard to see a recovery from this situation. My concern with this is they are moved to countries without the neccessary help to support these dogs we love.

I hasten to add for me this is not a greyhound thing; far to many dogs of all breeds, not least the bull breeds, die due to overbreeding. I even had someone call me a few months ago asking if I could take in or signpost to a rescue for a famly of 5 minature jack russells
