Has anyone been affected by the new EU rules being enforced by DEFRA, requiring all dogs going from Ireland to the UK to have 21 days cover of rabies vaccine, passport & chip?
It is doing a lot of damage with the rescues getting places for dogs in the UK.
I think there was another thread about it last week on here Gina,someone said that greyhounds were excempt from it but im not sure if that includes rescue dogs..Just looking at donedeal and the amount of mongrels and low quality purebreds produced in this country is staggering..Im sure theyd all make lovely pets etc but the numbers just astound me-money just isnt in the country to buy them,feed them etc.I dont envy the job you do.

Dogs travelling to UK (including rescue dogs being rehomed in UK) will have to have passport/microchip & rabies shot (even though there is no rabies in UK or Ireland This ruling is demanded by the EU to have Ireland/UK in line with the rest of the EU ... seems mad that we cannot get an exception to the rabies shot requirement when both UK/Ireland are rabies free??? (Dog Trust specifically in Ireland will have to pay up about E900K to have the number of dogs that are being shipped to UK for rehoming, brought up to compliance)

A lot of these rules are brought in to protect the welfare of dogs but the reality of the situation is people will simply take unwanted dogs to the vet and have them put to sleep.
Perhaps someone might like to find out the answer to a question many people are asking:
Why on earth would DEFRA decide to enforce the EU legislation requiring rabies vaccinations for dogs travelling between all EU countries to include rescue dogs in Ireland that are found new homes in the U.K? Ireland and the U.K. are rabies free so what is the point?
The enforcement of this ruling will have a huge cost implication for all dog rescue organisations in Ireland who send dogs to the UK. The resulting expense of vaccination and having to board these dogs during the 21 day period thereafter will mean they will be forced to rescue fewer dogs.
No dogs are exempt, ALL dogs have to have the passport and rabies vaccination, it is the EU that has insisted that the law now be implemented. There will be spot checks, not at all ports all the time, not on every ferry, but if you get stopped without one, dog will be seized, quarantined, you will be prosecuted and liable for all costs.
This bureaucratic lunacy will add considerable delays between rescue and re-homing and ultimately mean that more dogs will die in Irish pounds because there was no room or funds available for them in many of the rescue operations currently helping these dogs.

I can see the problems that you would be having Gina, but I would make the following suggestions. If a Greyhound is required by the owner to be rehomed with you, then at this stage of the proceedings, I would ask that owner to take his dog to the Vet, and have all the necceasary vaccinations, chipping, passport etc etc.
When they have all been completed, then you take the dog in, and you rehome them in the normal way.
That way they are not "clogging" up your kennel, and you are not having to go to all extra expense and running around.
Oh Geoff. That would make our lives and the dogs lives so so much easier, but it so rarely ever happens. There are a few good people who do that, but 85% drop off the entire dog with 20 or in a few cases 50. The average dog costs rescue 200 before it is fed. If you say you cant take them, they are PTS. This new rule means that the collies/labs/terriers will now also be clogging up rescue kennels all over the country. Not to mention the greys that are not sold in Irish sales and would normally go to the UK. The owners won't undertake all this red tape. The pounds will be heaving and will have no choice but to destroy more & more dogs.

This made me Smile Geoff....To be truthful has the EU ever come up with a useful rule.....How on earth can you be governed by Jobsworths that have no care for individual Country needs.....Pure lunacy
