Dead set!

This is one of the very things that the antis are killing us on and to be honest, I agree with them!
Most injuries caused by racing can be fixed!
They may not be racing propositions again but they can be rehabilitated to live normal pet lives.

Its a multi BILLION dollar industry and its too hard to put in place a rehab programme? REALLY?

This would be a very big positive step in proving that the industry is dedicated to welfare by implementing a protocol where if an owner cannot or does not want to continue with the dog after injury, that owner signs the dog over to authorities.
Every state GAP has a rehab unit with a network of vets on hand to treat the dog. The dog is rehabilitated and prioritized to the adoption programme.
WIN - WIN!

No more deaths on the track (only if absolutely necessary), no more antis throwing up stats, no more vets having to do this, and more Greys get to be pets.

Multi billion dollar industry can't organise this?
Give me a break.
Great PR, great result, and a great way to LOWER the deaths.

Simple plan that should have been in place decades ago. IMO.

Great Idea
A dedicated area of the Gap to service this area.
I am sure people will find negatives but look at the outcomes

In Qld with only seven clubs a commercial vet clinic shoukd be attached to all them over time treatment of greyhounds would become cost neutral and help public interface

And free injections and subsidised vet care for gap dogs for life. A true cradle to the grave solution. Do a business plan and take it to govt tell them you want to fund it with the monies be siphoned off to the horses

Spot on, John.
If they are serious, they need to do this.
There is already prize money reductions for welfare in Qld...USE IT, its not for anything else and there would still be money left over.
In NSW, if the Govt gave equal tax parity, part of this could pay for this project.
As you say, John, make GAP a service provider for the growing public with Greyhound pets...specialized Grey Vets to service the public at reasonable rates.
Those Greys that are saved from track accidents turn into ambassadors for the sport, NOT DEATHS.
Which is better?

Come on authorities, in the past regulators haven't acted, everyone is singing WELFARE.
Here is a chance to show it...if you are serious.

As it stands now the horse industries will be feverishly
Working on welfare strategies to head off bad press and the greyhounds are paying for it, while being accused of not doing enough.

Another thought bubble I had a while back was for the GAP systems around Australia to have an agility team to perform at Shows etc made up entirely of retired race dogs, the narrative would reinforce this fact and try and reconnect with the public. It costs money but we know where there is plenty and its earned by us.

Anyway guru you should have named thread stop euthanasia in its tracks, then all us keyboard warriors could have unloaded with ideas lol

Some great thoughts
What about an agility team as you say to tour round all the shows including the easter show in sydney and tbe ekka show in Brissy where they could have past and maybe even present serving pollies answer questions put to them and see if they can answer HONESTLY that would be a hoot

Sorry to place a bit of humour in your thread but its one of the ways to comprehend to me what is a very sad time in almost 100 years of a community activity in Australia that has bought great pleasure to many many generations of familys in Australia.
It never started out as a multi million gambling and revenue earner it was just fun to get your hound to go quicker than the other guys. Goverments legislators saw the benifits of making revenue from it and it went from there.
I still get a kick out of watching a dog i welped reared broke in trained win a race or even just race against his peers.
And not as the journalist who got off track in her article about people claiming to be proud of themselves.
I am proud of the animal and the effoert that they put in ..No jockey to ride them up or hold them to the last 200m or guide them through a field . No driver to position them in a race for cover and wait for the bell lap and the sprint lane.
Just their own speed and ability as they leave the boxes.
Rail jump well push up dont fight, chase hard and dont get hurt my mate and we'll drive home and maybe even get an iccy or a maccas on the way home.for both of us.
And do it all again next week.

In the USA, from my understanding, they have GAP agencies attached to each track

We should be striving for the same outcome here

Great idea Michael

There is a simple solution to drastically reduce euthanasia on the track.... not very practical, and it spoils the spectacle of racing.... Only race on straight tracks,or modify the existing tracks.

Have a look at the upcoming Olympics.
For races of 800m or less, each athlete has a separate lane at the start.
Races of up to, and including 400m are run entirely in lanes.
Races of 800m start and continue in lanes until the end of the first bend.

Now I'm not suggesting for one moment that we have dog racing lanes... but bearing in mind, the greyhound can reach a full speed of 70 kilometres per hour (43 mph) within 30 metres or six strides from the boxes, traveling at almost 20 metres per second for the first 250 metres of a race.

With the present concept of having a field of eight greyhounds having to negotiate a turn within 100 metres after the start, or in most cases,a much lesser distance,it is a recipe for dogs to be injured or killed.

The public won't accept the present injury/mortality rate of racing.

I read all the transcripts of the NSW inquiry, and what GRNSW did trying to hide the race deaths of dogs was stupidity..
Broken neck was neck injury, broken leg was leg injury.. this was unfortunately the typical picture the industry painted of itself in other areas also.

The greyhound world can go on, but only if it moves with the times.
