On behalf of Mullingar GOBA and it's members we would like to congratulate Mrs Mary Guiney and Mrs Mary O'Kelly on their magnificent achievement of winning the Derby in clonmel today with their 2 dogs: Reikers Island and Blades of fire. And a brilliant training performance by Gerry Houlihan
Both the Guiney and O'Kelly family have been great supporters of Greyhound racing in Mullingar and Dr Paddy O'Kelly was president of the IGOBF for a long number of years until he recently retired.
We would also like to congratulate the Cheese and Chips Syndicate for winning both the dog champion stake and the bitch champion stake. With another brilliant training performance.
I would safely say there will be more than cheese and chips on the menu tonight !!!
Well done to all.

It's some achievement to have litter brothers win the Derby. Congratulations! Living the dream.

Great performance to get them both to the final but very disappointing indeed that they didn't contest it. I don't really see how you can legitimately say either dog won the Derby.
You couldnt get more deserving owners who have put so much onto the sport......well done
And to breed them both too is very special

Hi all,
In 1972 2 litter brothers owned by Sir Rupert Mac Kinson, Newmoreking and Heathermoreking divided the Derby. So this is history repeating itself and that final was not run off either. We will never know which of the 2 dogswould have won the course on Monday but you have to look at it from the owners point of view they were going to have first and second place anyway and they now have 2 superdogs that they can look forward to in all age coursing next year . The litter brother and sister that won the champion bitch and dog stake on Monday, im not sure if this is the first time that has ever been achieved but that is also a magnificent achievement for the people from Kilucan, that owned the 2 of them
If anybody knows if it has been done in the past can u let us know.

As i said on a different internet site the final of a Classic should be run off unless injury intervenes, 2017 has no Derby winner....

Charlie that last statement of yours suggest that you know absolutely nothing about coursing. Dogs are not 'entered' as you suggest, but rather qualify to run in Clonmel and you are suggesting that if one owner is lucky enough to qualify maybe 5 or 6 dogs that they should only run what they think is their best one!!!! Dream on.

That rule is Charlie if a owner has two dogs in the final a final is not allowed to take place.thats the rule u obviously don't follow coursing or know the rules.the rules in coursing from Betting view is u get half your stake if there is no final on either dog as it called a dead heat..make sure ye know the rules before you have a bet..it would still be the same if blades or reikers were declared the winner without the course been ran...

Reikers Island won his quarter but would not have been 8/1 as he was hardly that to win the Derby. If your mate backed him to win the quarter he collected, if he backed him to win the Derby at 8/1 he collected at 4/1. Simple. Same rules year in year out.
