At a Court in County Meath 3 men who were caught by the Wild Life Officers ably assisted by the Gardai were found to have been Hunting Hares without a licence.
When Gardai and the wildlife officers arrived on the scene of the crime they observed 2 dead hares lying under a car, they also observed 3 men and a pack of dogs, none of them Greyhounds chasing other Hares.
The wildlife officers seized the dead hares and under examination they found one to be male the other a heavily pregnant female.
Three charges were brought against each man and they were fined 1,000 on two of the charges with the benefit of the probation act applied on the third charge.
This is the first conviction gained by the wild life officers and now sets a precedent for future cases.

Good news.....these people take far more hares in a night than a season of coursing clubs account for

Police in Eire and Uk should have better things to do with there resources.
As always looking for soft targets instead of solving REAL crime that impacts on communities.
If the said offenders were caught hunting hares thru the summer months whilst the Hare is breeding i have no sympathy.
If it was during the Hunting season its a fecking discrace.

Lee over here in Ireland Coursing Clubs need 6 difference licenses in order to Catch.....keep....course and release hares......all of these steps are over seen by a Vet and a Wildlife officer...The hare is a protected animal.

It is not OK for anyone whoi feels like it to go out killing pregnant hares. If these people want food for the pot there are rabbits that are unprotected.

Don't think I know anyone that hunts with collies or whippets Conor, like yourself I work over in County Meath and only know what is been reported in the papers. I know the wildlife boys are based in Navan only know them from them visiting our meeting at Christmas.

You're kind of contradicting yourself there, solve real crime and then you've no sympathy for them if they're caught.?

Sorry, mightn't have made myself clear Seamus.
I didn't mean the hunters... If you get my drift.

No Connor im not contridicting myself.
Iv said if they were hunting - coursing during the summer months iv no sympathy and they deserve all they get .
If imo it was from end of september thru till beginning of march im 100% all for coursing be it to rules with Greyhounds or with Lurchers.
The Hunting Ban was and still is a terrible piece of legislation.

Lee

The objective of coursing is to test and judge the athletic ability of the dogs rather than to kill the hare.

Coursing is supposed to be 2 dogs let off a fair distance after a hare.

4 dogs and a lamp is nothing short of scandalous. This is why the legislation is there to protect the hare.

Fair deuce to the wildlife services for getting this to court as quite simply put it is against the law what they were doing, and more times than not it is us coursing supporters that get the blame for this type of activity. We Coursing people operate under the under the ICC rules which is legal.
