“The Producer” Written by David Brasch SOMETIMES the opportunity of a lifetime comes along, an opportunity far too good to refuse.
That’s what came about when the chance to buy US superstar race dog KIOWA PRODUCER for a stud career in Australia. The son of Dragon Fire-Kay V Sweet Kay by Flying Penske came with a reputation. It was a reputation earned on the racetrack with the highest of deeds. Consider simply his overall stats of 94 race starts for 50 wins (YES, 50 wins!), 15 seconds, four thirds and six fourths. But then add the fact he was a member of the 2013 All America team and this puts him into a special place among stars of greyhound racing the world over. Only eight, the supreme eight of the year, are chosen as members of the All America team.
It is an honour savoured for decades among the US greyhound racing hierarchy. Generally, All America team members become high class stud dogs. Not always, but the odds are well in their favour. KIOWA PRODUCER, a dark brindle dog whelped in April 2011, is regarded “desperately unlucky” not to have made the All America team again in 2014. Politics, even in greyhound racing, can be tough to overcome. The 31.5kg speedball, the weight of most superstar stud dogs, earned his place in the All America team on the toughest and most competitive racetrack in the US. Southland is NOT a speed dog’s racetrack. It is a powerhouse circuit where come-from-behind types prove mercurial. KIOWA PRODUCER defied all this. He defied anyone to run him down. That defiance saw him have a 2013 that matched many and topped most.
It was a year in which KIOWA PRODUCER earned his All America ranking via wins in three stakes races. He landed the Hollywood World Classic, the Southland Derby and the Chris Callas Memorial at Southland. He would be third in the Southland Peoples’ Choice Championship.
The following year he would be second in the Southland Sprint Championship and again make the final of the Southland Derby.
The 2013 Derby victory was something else. KIOWA PRODUCER downed fellow All American U Too Pure Silk and the great race bitch Oshkosh Grace. In the World Classic, KIOWA PRODUCER downed 2013 American Derby winner Moms Hellion. Both the Derby and World Classic are “sire making” races.
The Derby has been won by now champion US stud dog Kiowa Mon Manny (bred on an identical cross to KIOWA PRODUCER) and Hondo Black who went to Ireland to become a superstar at stud.
The World Classsic is one of the US’ great races and has been won by such legends as Downing, My Unicorn, For Real, By Tar, Bomb Threat, Flying Stanley and EA’s Itzaboy. In recent times Tiger Boy and Yahoo Omar won it. Champion stud dog Kiowa Sweet Trey could finish only second in the Classic during his racing hey day. There can be no doubting the racetrack ability of KIOWA PRODUCER. He passes every test.
If anyone needs convincing, a simple watch of his Southland Derby victory will suffice. KIOWA PRODUCER explodes from his wide draw, crosses to the front and defies some of the greats of US racing to run him down. The World Classic was just the same … “it’s all about KIOWA PRODUCER” said the track announcer and he was so right. KIOWA PRODUCER comes to Australia with a pedigree “to die for”. He is a mix of the best bloodlines from throughout the world, Australia, the US, Ireland and England. He is the epitome of the changing world of greyhound bloodlines. His sire Dragon Fire is by Aussie legend Brett Lee and anyone who has ever taken the slightest interest in greyhound racing anywhere in the world will be well aware of the impact Brett Lee has had. Dragon Fire was a member of the 2006 All America team and won three straight stakes races during the year. He has become an outstanding stud dog and highly promising broodbitch sire. KIOWA PRODUCER is easily his best son. Kay V Sweet Kay, dam of KIOWA PRODUCER, was no slouch on the racetrack. She won 28 races and was a high class stakes bitch. As would be expected, she has become a wonderful producer. So good was her litter to Dragon Fire that her owners put her back to that dog in a bid to create another KIOWA PRODUCER. Perfection is always the target. KIOWA PRODUCER is perfection.
Kay V Sweet Kay is bred on that most famous of US crosses, that between champion sires Flying Penske and Kiowa Sweet Trey. Penske and Trey carry very close linebreeding. This “nick” was reinforced when Kay V Sweet Kay was put to Dragon Fire. That’s because Dragon Fire’s second dam Flying See Doo is a half sister to Flying Penske. It is the same cross, but in reverse, to that which produced Kiowa Mon Manny.
The similarities between champion race dog, champion sire Kiowa Mon Manny and Aussie-bound KIOWA PRODUCER are amazing. On the racetrack BOTH won the Southland Derby with sustained speed.
And their pedigrees are exactly the same. Kiowa Mon many is also bred on the cross of Flying Penske mixed with a half sister. What this does is produce a highly in-bred animal who is able to then dominate the broodbitches he mates. This has been proven in Australia in recent years via the success of such in-bred, and great stud dogs as Collision, Bombastic Shiraz, Surf Lorian, the litter brothers Where’s Pedro and Hallucinate. That legend of all legends Temlee is in-bred on a similar theme to KIOWA PRODUCER. Thus, broodbitches with all these in-bred and influential stud dogs in their pedigrees could suit KIOWA PRODUCER based on the highly successful theory to which Paul Wheeler himself gives great credence.
Based on the great success of Kiowa Mon Manny, there is every reason to fully expect KIOWA PRODUCER to become just as great a stud dog. The world’s leading breeder Paul Wheeler is always looking to breed his in-bred broodbitches to unrelated, but hugely in-bred stud dogs. With the US stud dog thrust firmly into the spotlight in Australia in recent times via Kelsos Fusileer’s remarkable son Fernando Bale, the US stud dog is “flavor of the month” in this country.
The most obvious is to link KIOWA PRODUCER to bitches who carry Brett Lee in their pedigree … consider how many of those are available in Australia. Multitudes, of course.
Brett Lee can be duplicated, via sons and daughters, with great confidence in matings to KIOWA PRODUCER. Flying Penske is the damsire of KIOWA PRODUCER and thus he will have a great bearing on how well
“The Producer” achieves at stud in Australia. Penske has been a huge influence in this country.
A “perfect” mating for KIOWA PRODUCER will be daughters of Mogambo that wonderful stud dog whose daughter Sweet It Is has become the country’s greatest stayer and all-time money earner.
Sweet It Is has Flying Penske as the sire of her mother. Thus it will make perfect sense to put Mogambo bitches, and there are plenty, to KIOWA PRODUCER in a bid to recreate the cross that came up with Sweet It Is. Daughters of young stud dog Banjo Boy, a half brother to Sweet It Is, will also appeal as mates for KIOWA PRODUCER.
Because Flying Penske comes into the pedigree of KIOWA PRODUCER via a daughter, the many bitches in Australia by SONS or grandsons of Flying Penske will also appeal. These will include bitches with Djay’s Octane, Bella Infrared, Texas Gold, Symmetry, Kiowa Mon Manny, SH Avatar etc etc etc in their make-up. Bitches with Penske via daughters will also suit KIOWA PRODUCER.
The second dam of KIOWA PRODUCER is by Kiowa Sweet Trey and he too is a superstar sire and with a huge presence in Australia. Mates for KIOWA PRODUCER via a doubling of Kiowa Sweet Trey can come via bitches that carry Trey through Flying Stanley or his son Glen Gallon, the great brothers Destini Fireball and Destini Gold, Venus Espinosa etc etc etc.
There are numerous bitches in this country with Kiowa Sweet Trey in their pedigree waiting for a mating to KIOWA PRODUCER to double this wonderful worldwide influence.
In Australia, Kiowa Sweet Trey has done specially well when mated to Surf Lorian and Primo Uno, Where’s Pedro (Destini Fireball), Bekim Bale (Space Star) and Turanza Bale (Grigorieva Bale). Bitches with any of these stud dogs in their pedigree will suit KIOWA PRODUCER.
Kiowa Sweet Trey bitches have also done well in Ireland with the Aussie-bred Ace Hi Rumble and he is from the same family as champion sire Collision and Cosmic Rumble. Bitches with either of these in their bloodlines should suit KIOWA PRODUCER. A bitch called Articled Clerk is the third dam of KIOWA PRODUCER and her presence will bring about a very special cross for Aussie broodbitch owners looking to mate to “The Producer”. Articled Clerk is a daughter of the great stud dog Skelligs Tiger who just happens to be a litter brother to Curryhills Fox (damsire of Spiral Nikita) and Curryhill Brute (found in numerous Aussie broodbitches). This is the Skipping Chick family and one that also lays claims to Staplers Jo (sire of Larkhill Jo the damsire of Fabregas) and Daleys Gold (the Irish stud sensation found in numerous pedigrees in Australia). Skelligs Tiger is found in the sireline of Premier Fantasy the Irish champion who has had such a profound influence on bloodlines in Australia. He is everywhere in our pedigrees. He, and his son Fear Zafonic, will have an important role to play in the future at stud of KIOWA PRODUCER.
Bitches with Spiral Nikita in there pedigree will also be “special” for KIOWA PRODUCER.
This is because he is bred on a reverse cross to the abovementioned Articled Clerk. Stud dogs with Spiral Nikita in their pedigree include Magic Sprite, Cosmic Rumble, Oaks Road, Buttsie Bale (damsire of Dyna Double One), Bo Frazier and his litter brother Talks Cheap, Crump, Digital, Late Late Show, Milldean Panther (he will be ideal for KIOWA PRODUCER), Paddy Whacker, Droopy’s Marco and Droopy’s Scolari etc etc etc. But it doesn’t end there! The famous English race bitch and wonder producer Westmead Move is the fifth dam of KIOWA PRODUCER. She, and her female family, have established a dynasty around the world. The highly influential broodbitch Westmead Flight (dam of Larkhill Jo and Sonic Flight) is also from this family. So, too, is Balligari the English Group 1 winner who came to Australia for stud and has left a smattering of influence in this country.
He is found in the pedigree of a number of sires. These include Lochinvar Marlow, Return The King, Buckingham Chuck, Waterview Star, Typhoon Tide, Super Burst … and in the future any bitches by that great Tassie sprinter Buckle Up Wes.

Through a DAUGHTER of Molotov, it can be accesses via such stud dogs as Blazin Wildfire, Bella Infrared, SH Avatar, Soprano Drive, Paddy Whacker etc etc etc. So there you have it … KIOWA PRODUCER appears on the threshold of great things. A superstar race dog who defied the racing pattern of the US’ toughest racetrack to become an All America team member, with a pedigree mixed with some of the greatest bloodlines the world has to offer, and bred on a pattern that has already been proven to the highest level at stud. “The Producer” has it all!
