Greyhound racing organized in the way as it is known from the professional countries: Australia, USA, Ireland, and the United Kingdom was introduced in Continental Europe with the foundation of the Continental Greyhound Racing Confederation (CGRC) in 1989.

The leading countries within CGRC today are the scandinavian countries Sweden, Finnland, Denmark.

However the roots of the sport date back longer to the early 1920s.
