Hi Niall,
I have an old coverless Plumpton book which mentions this trait.
Briefly it states that this was originaly first noticed in the
Irish greyhound breed, although the Romany's (Gypsies) bred a
species called Lurchers or commonly known as a poachers hound
by crossing other hunting dogs with greyhounds ie terriers and
such.Eventually these were then crossed with the Galgos Espanol
or commonly known as the Spanish Greyhound, these were bred for
their stamina over long distances and in coursing events.
The condition is known now as "The Irish Crest", the breed was exported to America as well and bore this furry crest.
Hope this can help.
Regards Ron.

The only trait as far as I can see here is, they tend to be
more aggressive when on the chase, although pretty laid back
in their normal nature.

Hi Niall,
These are some American bred greyhounds with the crest, as you
will see two are from the Fuzzys line.

FF Spider by Flying Hydrogen x Fuzzys Tenor
CRT Qadeer by Fuzzys Cannon x CRT Bonnie
Hanks Viktor by Fortress x Musical Bean
Win Carole Win by Greys Statesman x Kiowa Deer Run
Slapshot by Braddy x Eastern Sky
WW's Aunt Jane by Trent Lee x Aunt M
Maybe you can trace back through the lines and find something.
The Crest can sometimes be placed on the side neck also.
Regards Ron.

My bitch is a daughter of Brett Lee and passed it on to her daughter. Both were hard chasers.

I had a dog with one on top of his head a few years back, he was very fast, very aggressive but very laid back until he he went to a track. He was by Hondo Black.

It is a little known fact that it was first noted in Coursing dogs in blarney during the sixties. Also often attributed to either the Sire or Dam finding themselves at the end of the rainbow and being blessed by the leprechaun that lives there.

I would imagine The Irish Crest was just the name for the Mohawk in Ireland. Chances are the gene came back in from UK or America as RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK were brought back from Africa. Worth noting the Greyhound mix is probably in the RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK as the Greyhound may have being crossed with the old African hunt dog to produce the RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK.Would be of interest to to see documented history from kennel clubs.
