Disappointed with litter of two from expensive sire. Two other litters of 3 and 2 for friends from same sire recently. All inseminated at same vet who described straws as good. Young bitches. Do I avoid stud dog or change vet?

Look up grv dog search to see what size litters the stud dog has had previously. There's 3 or 4 popular stud dogs that you're lucky to get pups from currently

Ray, it won't help you now, but next time you get a bitch mated, give her a double daily dose of vitamin E for the whole of her season. It is claimed to help with fertility, and we have done this with many previous matings/inseminations and have always got very good sized litters. We haven't had a small litter since we have been doing this, with first time breeders or older bitches. Give it a try and good luck.

Thanks for advice Matt and Carole. Looked up dogs stats. Realise that many others have had similar problem.

our last three litters from what you could describe as expensive sires

Fernando bale 9 pups (24 months old )

Barcia bale 8 pups (14 months old )

collision 11 pups (3 weeks old )

so we are quite happy with numbers

two different vets (Michael bell (2)
sandown vets (1)

I'm sorry this happened to you
Could you please PM me the name of sire ?
A friend just had the exact same problem with same sire on 2 young bitches . Ended up with a miss and a c section for pup that died in utero a week before due date.

Just a question. Are people still getting swabs done on their bitches even though they are getting inseminated by AI ?

It appears that one in demand stud dog is averaging less than three pups per litter if you take misses into account. It has been suggested that the extender mixed with semen before freezing is in short supply. Should studs charge per pup or go back to natural services?

Good to speak up , no harm in saying the sires name its a free world , its a forum to educate and get feed back to help each other with advise , no one hear biting anyones head off by mentioning sires name / vets ect, we are all paying customers, important for breeders going forward to get this knowledge , I for one feel 4 plus splits for any sire is greed strong semen or not

Ray I agree with Carole on vitamen e also check dog for thyroid problem may need thyroid tablets other thing is peogesterone test after 4-5 weeks as sometimes the bitch with low prog test will absorb pups back into system. cheers Ted.

I noticed a difference in the litter size pending on who i had spelling and then whelping my bitches.

I've used 4 whelpers for my 11 litters, 2 of them i had smaller litters but comparing them to the other 2 the bitch was not fed as 'top notch' and didn't have that super shiny coat that my other 2 whelpers had. The 2 better whelpers i had bigger litters as well as bigger pups.

Of my 11 litters i think my average is about 8.5 pups (had 1 x 6 litter and a 2 x 13 litters amongst), having used Fernando/Barcia/Moreira/Dyna double etc.

Have used Sandown for all my inseminations, but believe the diet of the bitch, and supplements as Carole has suggested is definitely going to help your bitches fertility.
