Thanks Sandro, but even if they sold all the pups you brought at the price you paid they should still go close to cover their costs depending how many in the litter. Its funny how we all want track upgrades and new tracks etc, when maybe we should be asking for a greyhound retirement farm. I think its a shame we are losing people like Mark from the industry but fear there will be more doing the same. Its not just the antis we should be worried about but should be pushing our governing bodies for a solution to this ever growing problem. Cheers

100% Michael, our authorities are just not doing the job, as usual, getting big salaries , paying their mates but not thinking of the overall health of the sport

I think the only reason pup prices have dropped is due to reholming.
Prize money is the best its ever been so really pup prices should be as good as there ever been But trainers owners and breeders can only keep so many till they are full.
You only need to look at the stud books to know we are in deep trouble in years to come
Gap are doing around 2000 pups per year but breeding is around the 9000pups
I had a dog break ulna and radius it has been plated screwed and dog is fixed but the leg bows like a banana . Now when he goes to gap do you really think someone will take him home knowing there can be big expenses if you let him run around yard to play. So gap in years will be filled with unwanted dogs from the public and will be no more spots to get any in gap

Totally agree Paul except Gap does around 2000 and breeding is about 4000 in NSW we have to be able to rehome and sort out the ones that can not be rehomed and move on we all have our pets and retired dogs but you can not keep them all .

Agree with you 100% there Mark

The way breeding is going downhill there may not be too many to rehome in 3 years time

So whats the answer?

I have 7 pups just come out of breakers. They wont all make it and race for the next 3 years. Rehoming will cost me more than they return

I have a very handy face bitch just retire, I want to bred, but I cant make myself do it. She is my one and last brood.

Hey Mark, my sincere apologies. Yes I should have went to spec savers. But I appreciate you see my point. Its seems the price of pups has gone up in line with prize money but unfortunately were not all going to win a MDC or have a dog that consistently wins in town. A pup that costs up to $20,000 before it gets to race is a huge gamble for the average person. Thats if you can find somewhere to finish rearing, manage to book it in for break in, which has also increased in price, then find a trainer if it makes it that far. Even to buy a cheaper pup is a mine field with all Ive just mentioned. I currently have a TAB-class bitch who unfortunately has issues with other dogs in the field. Apart from some friends who have been able to help me out here and there its been a shit fight trying to find anyone that can help. She has moved kennels three times in the last two months as friends have been only able to help for short periods. Trying to find a trainer that wants to have a crack with her is almost impossible. Anthony, I hear your pain and dont have an answer and if I did they wouldnt listen anyway. But I think its a question for our governing bodies that we need to seriously start asking and pushing. Maybe Mark Staines is right in saying they are slowly trying to kill us. For someone with a last name like Marks to be leaving the industry is seriously concerning. If money is the issue then we are in trouble and need to start looking at options to help save our industry. I have some ideas and have mentioned them before but not everyone will agree because not everyone is as concerned as I and others are. Cheers

The blind leading the ignorant , hence there will be a d -day .

With the product we have and the revenue raised each year , anyone who doesnt have a clue as to why within the industry has turned on itself (nothing to do with high interest rates or tough times ??? ) and getting worse ! Or have a clear strategy forward that rewards the majority pool of participants equally to the top end pool , needs to step out and go yarn with trainers at provincial and country tracks ! This collapse has been happening for years , and now in full drive with longtime participants leaving every week .

Over regulated , underpaid , no matter how much you love your greyhounds , who needs that daily headache !

It aint rocket science ! Just basic over due acknowledgement at the lower end on a massive scale .

Ps. Latest news this week is a lifetime ban on a champion trainer whos earnt over 6 mil ?

Enjoy your retirement hey !
