To help with this very important study could all members please update their dog's bereavement message, or submit any information to Shelley directly at:

[email protected]

The information about greyhound cancers in AU, IE and UK are equally important as bloodlines have gone back and forth between all countries for decades, so posts or forwarding on information should not be limited to US dogs.

If you are unable to update your dog's bereavement message please post the details in this thread and a team member will do the update.

Thank you to all members for taking part and sharing this information.

That's great news Tony, about time a study was done, over the years I have had different lines carrying the gene. I had a stud dog that had bone cancer and two of his pups got it, one in the brain and the other in his spleen he was only 5 years old.

Hi Catriona, greyhound people have suspected for years certain lines are more prone to cancer. It will be interesting to see what the study comes up with. Thanks for your input.

Bereavement messages? Where do I find these, or write them for my dogs? We've just adopted our 7th greyhound and have lost three to various cancers.

Judy, on a dog's pedigree page, open "Edit". You will find the Bereavement Message field below the "Comments" field.

I know a lot of greyhounds who died of cancer. Among them three own dogs. Unfortunately I can't update a dog and get the message: This page is locked

Hello Shelly
I have a dog named Jimmy Newob who has just retired. He will be 4 on the 28/5/19 . Since his retirement he developed a lump near the base of his tail. We had it removed but didn't get it tested . He has since grown another one on his forehead . His breeding is Cosmic Rumble x Nosey Rozy. Hope this helps your study.
Regards
Keith Bowen

Awareness only.
Another cancer study in dogs by Pharmaust.
I am currently a shareholder of a Bio Company Pharmaust (PAA) on the Australian stock exchange asx.
They are about to start stage 2 dog trials with there patented anti cancer drug Monepantel.
This drug has already had successful trials in dogs reducing tumors and stabilising cancer.
The initial drug was in a syrup form and not palatable enough for dog treatment.
New trials start next week with reformulated drug in tablet form, already trialled for pallatability with beagles readily eating tablet from hand with no side effects.
If successful, Elanco are in the background with an option agreement for Vetranarian cancer applications. This tablet has also been through testing with Olivia Newton John Foundation with positive results. Successful outcome will lead to Human trials.
Not an expert in this area but well worth dog owners knowing that if successful, this drug could be given at home with no high cost radiation treatment.

Hi Karin,
If I am right, you can yourself add Information on the dogs GD-Web page - get there via the link below it's name on its pedigree-page.
Hope this helps :)

Make sure if your feeding a lot of meat ,dont forget the calcium as it will increase your dogs PH and reduces the effect of Meat which is acidic and requires alkaline products like calcium to neutralise the acid that meat produces. Dont buy cheap calcium that has not got vitamin A & D in it. Cancer cant exist in a high PH ,but thrives in a low PH environment . Smart Trainers use calcium to offset lactic acid and cramping.

It amazes me how many greyhounds get histiocytoma or benign tumours that may or may not be pre-cancerous. I am not convinced that as a
-purebred- canine they are any more or less prone to developing cancers.

Seen it all in greyhounds- benign, osteosarcoma, lymphatic, spleen lesions etc. They live in different environments, were fed differently etc. It cannot be environmental related. It cannot be dietary. Its gotta be hereditary or just plain age related due to their accelerated metabolism.

Personally I dont think any greyhounds (subjects) over age 9 need to be included in any investigative analysis as it will distort the results.

Do I think based on experience that greyhounds are prone to developing cancer yes I do.. But for any study to be effective or have a meaning the subject group needs to be constrained on age/location etc else the study will prove little results of any meaning,

I'd like to know how many develop cancer from treatments such as DMSO and other linaments. There are 2 in my line that I believe developed cancer from DMSO. One was treated for recurring wrist injury and developed osteosarcoma in that wrist and passed away at 6 years of age. His 11 year old sisters are still alive and very well and healthy. My other boy was treated for metatarsel injury with DMSO and developed cancer in the hock joint and passed away young. The remaining littermates have not had any cancer. Just something I often think about when treating my dogs , we all used things we thought were safe even on our kids yet find out years later that they are not safe.
