If any one can give me there option on a dog I purchased with a so called swallon
Wrist , I do think previous trainer did not treat it properly, dog has been with new trainer for three weeks , he treated it every day ,did a good job with it , trialed at Lang Lang on Saturday ran very well over 300 m pulled up well then much later when trainer checked him before bed he had a swallon foot and he was sore on it .
Trainer iced it 3 times daily got all the swelling down except for a inflamed knuckle on a front foot , will be going to vet , but I would like to know the possibilitys of whats causing it and the possible ways of treatment , having bad run currently with dogs getting injury s so if any kind person can give there ideas please do ,
Much appreciated.Michael Maguire

sorry mate, and excuse my ignorance, but WHY would you purchase a dog with a swollen wrist? then from a swollen wrist is a swollen foot. now an inflamed "knuckle" you have gone from a stopper to a metacarpal to a toe. {best of luck mate}

No Richard he was purchased from SA where he was 100% fit sent him to a trainer inNSW who should not be allowed to hold a licence , he had two falls in NSW I took the dog off this person who failed to up hold his duty of care by treating the injury and then I sent him to a wonderful old gentleman in Vic who treated it every day thought he had got it right but it blew up again after a trial on the weekend .
The problem seems to be a knuckle joint and thats what Im asking for opinions on Richard .
Richard dont comment on issues that you cant help with but just throw muck , you got it wrong mate , thanks for your kind help

Sounds to me like you're describing two different injuries. The first one swelling around the wrist could be fracture/bone chips but probably more likely partial seperation of the head of the flexor tendons at the stopper bone junction. When it's not a wrist break it's almost always fluid draining down and gravity showing up at the wrist.

That said, that would never result in a swollen knuckle. That is almost always a dislocation or a rupture of one of the ligaments in the toe. More than likely a true dislocation after a coursing trial or run. Even once the toe is reset at the knuckle joint it will encapsulate and look a little more weird compared to the other toes but it is certainly not a show stopper in terms of a racing career.

Depending on the severity, you may need to put some elastic/tape/rubber glove to buddy tape the toe with the next major supporting one to prevent it from repeatedly popping out. At either rate, a vet visit would be in order.

Jason I Thank You for your very sound advice , its difficult for me to describe the injury as Im only going off what his trainer tells me and it has been mixed messages coming from him , wrist wont bend back completely but has no pain there today , his knuckle could be the problem as one is twice the size of the others , yes you are correct tapping could be very viable, his trainer is now saying it could be arthritis in the knuckle, I do thank you very much for very sound advice , Michael
Yes he is off to the vet Jason as soon as we can .
