Someone gave me a bucket of seaweed for livestock today and I was wondering if people thought it could be given to greyhounds or if it would be of any benefit to them? And how much to give?
It was processed in Ireland by ArraMara Teo.
It says on the bucket that there is 17%-20% crude ash.
There is a list of the other stuff in it but doesn't say the amounts;
Calcium, phosphorous, sodium, potassium, magnesium, iron, molybdenum, copper, iodine, manganese, cobalt, zinc, aluminium, boron selenium and B1 and B2 vitamins.

Hi Paul
This probably won't help if you have a racer but I always give my retired grey about half a teaspoon of seaweed in her feeds - it's packed with minerals and vitamins and can help keep their teeth free from placque.
Best wishes
Julie

Yes, Paul - there's a very pricey product called "PlaqueOff" that consists of seaweed - it makes the plaque easier to brush off.

Hi Paul, Seaweed is Kelp.A vast storehouse of Nature's wealth from the depths of the ocean. It contains trace amounts of almost all nutritional elements know to man. Particularly rich in natural iodine which is esential for the thyroid glad to make the hormone thyroxin, which controls the healthy functions of all vital organs including the liver, gallbladder. pancreas, kidneys, lungs and the reproductive organs, plus the activity and metabolism of cells throughout the body.Especially beneficial for healthy skin and hair (coat). Kelp is claimed to have cleansing effect on the blood, helps in maintaining the mucos membranes, provides resistance to infection, assists would healing and is reported to eliminate bad substances from the body. Its a natural diuretic, its tonic effect also helps in reducing susceptibility to fatigue and lethargy. Considering Kelp contains approximately 50 elements many difficult to obtain from today's foods, its an important yet very inexpensive suppliment to include in animals diet. Your dog will never need Thyroxine for their Thyroid if you use the product, also because its a natural diuretic, dont over load dog with products like Betacel. A teaspoon dose on nightly dinner, 3 times a week is sufficient for any race dog irrespective of wright. Also loose Kelp is my prefered way to use it, but most Health Food Shops would probably have it in tablet for. If you can get Swedish Kelp it is far superior than most others. NON SWABABLE. Hope this is of help.
Cheers. Karon.

Hi Paul,
I think that the seaweed powder which is made for animal use is the granular type one, which sounds like the one you have been given and the one which Ann has a similar picture of.
There is a human type one sold in health food shops which is a finer blend. I use this one for my dogs, around a teaspoon a day. -I have used the granular type but just prefer the finer kelp powder.
Geoff Bateman in Thurles stocks Chudleys seaweed powder which is produced for dogs.- This is the granular type too, and I have seen one or two other greyhound suppliers selling similar.

Yeah, the stuff I have looks similar, maybe a little blacker rather than greener and not quite as fine.
I haven't used and of it yet, was waiting until I knew more about it. How much should I give, a teaspoon on dinner every evening?

Gayle the recommended ration for Racing Greyhounds is a third of a teaspoon Three times weekly. It has Arsenic in it as does Rice, Wheat, Oats and Apple Seeds (Apple Cider Vinegar). However positive results were returned for Arsenic when a few Trainers were feeding rations of Tablespoon daily = 7 Tablespoons per week. Teaspoon daily = 7 teaspoons per week 1/3 teaspoon 3 times weekly = 1 teaspoon weekly. This is enough Iodine to treat Thyroid issues - Stress, Barking, Aggression etc.
There is an inclination of more is better but ration should always be researched not guessed.
Seaweed is a natural treatment for Thyroid unlike Thyroxine
What are the side effects of taking thyroxine tablets? What side effects can this medication cause? weight gain or loss. headache. vomiting. diarrhea. changes in appetite. fever. changes in menstrual cycle. sensitivity to heat.
When reading this link be mindful you are feeding a Greyhound athlete not a domestic dog.
Fed in correct ration Seaweed will not Contravene The Rules Of Racing

I used it for years until they stopped racing because of covid scare I kept feeding it and when they returned to racing I got a positive to arsenic we figured it built up while not racing and it cost me $2000 dollars. Be careful using as I wasnt the only one to get a pos at the time.
Pups love to grab it on the beach and shake the shit out of it. I throw a big lump of it in the water and they run in through the waves and get it, shake it and run off with it still shaking it. Never seen a pup sit down and start eating it though.

Dosage Guide For Dental Hygiene Cats and Small Dogs (up to 10kg) 1/16 to 1/8 teaspoon daily (1 to 2 pinches daily) Medium Dogs (10kg to 25kg) 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon...
So 7 X 1/4 is just under 2 teaspoons a week. However as they don't swab domestic Dogs
1/3 Teaspoon every second day = 1 teaspoon weekly and will keep The Stewards Away
Seaweed Meal main function is as Iodine for Thyroid. Natural not Synthetic Thyroxine.
