GOOSE TO TAKE FLIGHT IN BRANDYWELL OAKS DECIDER
Peter Farrell

After two highly competitive rounds, there will plenty of interest in proceedings North of the border tonight as the final of the TT Thermal Insulation Contractors & Magical Bale Oaks takes centre stage at the Brandywell greyhound stadium in Derry.

Carrying a winners purse of£800 plus a free service to the brilliant Magical Bale, this event has been dominated by two bitches in particular and those in attendance look set to be treated to a top-class buckle.

Of the six finalists, the only unbeaten runner in the decider is the Shea Campbell-owned Fayes The Boss. This choicely bred daughter of Tullymurry Act and Droopys Smasher, a sister to Irish Derby runner-up Singalong Sally, has been flawless since arriving at the Brandywell in mid-September and she looks certain to play a part from a plumb draw in six. However, despite seeing off Canada Goose comfortably in the opening round, Stephen Townsleys tracker remains the one to beat. The daughter of Out Of Range and Droopys Ant completely fluffed her lines on that occasion but bounced back in style last time out to record a fastest of the stake, 28.80. To put that clock into perspective, it is the quickest at the track in over three years and only .2 spots off the current track record, held by Central Boss. The reward for that performance is another perfect draw in trap one and if starting on terms, Canada Goose looks very difficult to oppose with further improvement a live possibility. In truth, the aforementioned duo look a class above the other finalists and it would be a major shock if one of the remaining quartet were to prevail. However, if traffic were to ensue, Hatmore Ava could play a part for Paul Whyte. A winner of her opening round assignment in a good 29.08, she visibly moved wide from trap two last week and she is sure to benefit from a much better draw in the orange jacket this time around. Of the others, Duggies Elle improved just shy of seven lengths between rounds one and two and looks like one for the future, while both Fridays Flight and Gotheratlast are capable of big performances but they will need to rediscover their very best form in order to enter calculations. Selection - Canada Goose.

Brandywell Greyhound Stadium would like to extend thanks to Tony Teague and the Brandywell Supporters Group for the generous sponsorship of this event, as well as the Westwell Racing Club Syndicate who, in conjunction with Newpark Stud, have kindly offered the free service to Magical Bale.

GOOSE LANDS IN RECORD-BREAKING TIME TO CLAIM OAKS VICTORY
Peter Farrell

The much anticipated final of the TT Thermal Insulation Contractors & Magical Bale Oaks took centre stage last night at the Brandywell stadium in Derry and as expected, it produced a special performance from the Stephen Townsley-owned Canada Goose.

Heading into the decider, it was very much dubbed a match-race between two bitches who had dominated the stake in Canada Goose and the unbeaten, Fayes The Boss. However, it was the former who delivered a masterclass as she bolted from trap one to quickly open a comfortable lead approaching the opening corner. It was always going to take a monumental effort thereafter to reel in Canada Goose and after some traffic ensued in behind, the daughter of Out Of Range ASB and Droopys Ant was relentless in galloping to a brilliant, nine and a half length victory over Duggies Elle in second.

NEW TRACK RECORD

What made the victory all that sweeter for connections was the winning time of 28.59, which is a new track record at Derry.

This was almost three lengths faster than the old record of 28.78, held by Central Boss since 2018. The 525-yard trip at the Brandywell is considered one of the stiffest in Ireland given it actually measures approximately 528-yards so this was a sensational effort from a very talented bitch.

RECORD BREAKING PERFORMANCE FROM QUILL MINSTRAL
Peter Farrell

There was a special performance at the Brandywell greyhound stadium in Derry last night as Quill Minstral set new figures for the 500-yard distance

Owned by Lee Ferris, Quill Minstral has always been held in the highest regard by connections and despite his card reading some modest returns, there are one or two performances squeezed in between that point to an obvious engine which was on display for all in attendance last night.

Pictured right is Lee Ferris with Freddie after Quill Minstral set a new track record at the Brandywell Greyhound Stadium in Derry.

Running in a good class 500-yard event, the son of Droopys Jet and Galtymoore Moon was electric from the red jacket and he had already opened a sizable lead on the approach to the opening turn. From here, his rivals never made a yard on the talented brindle as he powered to the winning line seven lengths clear of nearest rival, Move Over Daithi, in second. Manalishi Chief posted a brilliant 27.45 back in June of this year but that time was to be lowered by almost four lengths as Quill Minstral stopped the clock in an amazing 27.19. A serious effort from Ferris charge and one suspects that this clock will stand for quite some time at Derry.

Earlier this week, the Brandywell Track Management announced the sad loss of one of the Tracks founding members, Charlie Junior McDaid

Everyone at the Brandywell Greyhound track passed on their sincere condolences to the McDaid family. They said, Charlie played an instrumental role in ensuring the Brandywell Track remained a key player in the greyhound world, forming great connections all over Ireland, the UK, USA & Australia. Charlies experience in business & politics helped create strong foundations which have stood the test of time & helped ensure that the Tracks redevelopment was a success.

The Derry News (Derry Now online) also paid a fitting tribute to Charlies entire life and acknowledged his role as a prominent member of the local greyhound fraternity. They said A lifelong greyhound and coursing enthusiast, he was a founding member of the Brandywell Racing Company and played a prominent role in re-establishing greyhound racing in the city.He was also a member of the management committee of the Irish Coursing Club which ran coursing throughout the island of Ireland.

Online messages of condolences have been flooding social media by many of the greyhound racing enthusiasts that have known Junior over the years at the Brandywell. He was a popular figure and described by those who knew him as a remarkable man, a gentleman and a friend. His smiling face will be greatly missed at the Brandywell and the Brandywell Greyhound Supporters Group wish to pass on their deepest sympathy to Juniors son Paul who regularly attends the Brandywell and to all the McDaid family and his friends and colleagues.

May he rest in Peace.
