I believe that he had undescended testicles, Howard, unfortunately.

What does his testicle status have to do with retirement versus "taking a dirt nap".. I haven't seen any news about this but I found this comment disturbing. No nuts, as it were, doesn't mean can't make a great pet. Just ask Prankster.
Anyway if natural causes got him etc cool, but no testicles isn't a valid reason for the interchangeably used term "retirement".
I'm assuming you meant simply he couldn't have any progeny and that's unfortunate?

Well okay - what's the sad death of Poke the bear about? Anyone got a link? (I don't do Facebook so if it's there I don't consider it real news)
I understand why he has no progeny. Why is the champ dead?

No idea mate - I did a google "poke the bear greyhound death" etc and nothing came up. My question is actually innocent. I never heard he died and I'm curious. Nothing at all to do with lack of children he sired.
Normally such a prolific winner would show up in an article on greyhound recorder or some such but nup nothing there. So genuinely curious and at any rate RIP Poke The Bear. Even if I am last to hear this news. Great dog.

Hey Sandro - thanks heaps for that direct link to greyhound recorder. Cancer it was!
I went to greyhound recorder home page hit news and next links 5 pages in and it still never showed up. So again thanks for that. Link works beautifully and no idea why I can't google it or find it when navigating their site.
Thank you also Simon - that GRV link worked beautiful and I can find the news even if I start from home page. Couldn't do that at greyhound recorder. Cleared my browser cache and tried again and still only direct link from Sandro worked to that article.
Footnote and final comment - I love this quote from the GRV article ---
He was more than a race dog to us, he was a pet, a friend and an absolute gentleman.
That's exactly how I wish to see all my dogs treated in retirement irrespective of their form or prize money on track. If they tried honestly and did their best they deserve precisely this level of respect. If they didn't try so much and all that and failed as chasers maybe we leave it as a snippet "she/he's a great pet" lol.
