Are they necessary or not. My understanding is every state as different rules for use of calm / bark muzzle. WA total ban, SA ok except if temp is 36c
Vic ban of use in kennels. NSW ? Qld ok for now with strong rumours of total ban.
Obviously there as been incidents resulting in dogs dying. So whats the future and what impact will it have on daily / nightly routines and what impact for dogs
( neighbours) ?
Sensitive topic but worth raising

I have just been informed that a total nationwide calm / bark muzzle ban ruling is drafted and proposals will be finalised April 19th . National proposal to rule changes emailed to greyhound licence holders. So if you object you best start to tattle the cage or buy a suit

There's a big difference between the two types of muzzle.

well some dogs will now be unraceable as that is the only way they will settle in the kennels.

Today Ive spoken to a few WA trainers where total ban on calm / bark muzzles as been in place past few years. Im told its the worse rule ever brought in. Track kennels, letting dogs bark freely has created more barkers than ever before.
Yes many dogs race performance affected due to constant barking in kennels.
Many trainers have neighbours complain about dogs barking, trainers forced to reduce numbers in kennels too reduce noise. One trainer said no longer will he train constant barkers in fear of neighbours complaining to council.

All styles of calm / bark muzzles , metal, leather, plastic, all will be illegal

Hmmm barkers you say...

Is the context just race day kennels or in general (neighbours)??

There's different solutions for different situations and different rules in different States in those situations.

The only uniform rule I know of that is common across all jurisdictions is the prohibition on shock/electric collars at all times.

So without knowing context here's options to consider depending on where you live and whether its race or just at kennels at home:

- Ultrasonic bark suppression devices
- Ulrasonic/vibration bark suppression collars
- Citronnella (spray) collars that squirt undesirable stuff when they bark
- Compression suit
- Barking muzzle (wire)
- Barking Muzzle (leather)
- Spray bottle (handheld to train, squirt em when they bark)
- Radio (music sometimes calms the savage beast when left unattended)
- Adaptil (or similar) pheromone spray all over their kennel mat
- Yard muzzle on dog plus Adaptil etc.

Honestly I don't know the context but all of above and sometimes in combination can assist.

At home it's a behavioural condition that can be managed and trained out of them. In the race day kennels it's entirely about reading the dog and finding out what is allowed and can be deployed.

The only time my dogs bark is when I arrive home (for maybe 3 minutes) and they'll go nuts for maybe 5 minutes if they know I am leaving property to race and they didn't get selected to come with. But all those things above I have and do use to adjust a fresh arrivals behaviour if they are a problem child when they get here.

Most importantly of all fresh arrivals get placed next to calm dogs. Making dogs Zen outside of the race kennels is the main part. Calm dog at home, calmer dog in kennels. In race day kennels it's about stress management techniques that are permitted in your jurisdiction.

We need to ask ourselves what is worse a dog that barks all night in the race kennels upsets the rest of the dogs in his race , and that night he runs 5 or 6/lengths slower that when he has calming muzzle on . He pulls up dehydrated and take time to get over the run and maybe show symptoms of acidosis.

I have seen report of study where dogs have worn barking muzzles for long periods. No signs in blood tests of increased stress levels at all which I thought was surprising.

Theres quite a few that need muzzling and none of them are greyhounds. Would be more beneficial for everyone. Cheers
