EEC law says no such thing. In fact, EU law doesnt state it either.

Fair play to the new GM at Mullingar. A dog man.

Does this mean that the unemployed in IRELAND are not informed of the posts available and they are therefore unable to compete or apply for the vacant positions. I thought we lived in a free world where everybody had equal rights.

Can somebody change this topic to New Mullingar manager.

Above, somebody stated that if the name Cowan was not on the application form would he have gotten a look in.

How about, if his name wasnt Cowan, and an successful professional, and person with vast experience of dealing with local issues, and community issues was appointed as general manager of one the the most community spirited and locally driven tracks in the country, would the consensus not be one of applause. To boot this man has years of greyhound ownership behind him, and comes from a greyhound family.

There is far too much negativity about every move made by the IGB in what is certainly one of the toughest periods it has faced.

**I have no gr for Cowan's political alliances, and am no staunch backer of the IGB, I am a greyhoud owner, breeder and follower, hoping for the best.

The biggest single issue with greyhounds in recent year was the breeders bill, and it highlighted the need for political sway, and greyhounds to have a foothold in Leinster house. The silence on the issue was deafening here from some of the antagonists posting on this thread, and while there energies, which seem to be vast, we focussing on the negative, they were and will be again needed to ensure the future of 'the game'. any chance of an an end to this continuous bad press for our sport on the foremost greyhound site in the world.

This would be my view

Barry Cowen appointed at Mullingar
03/11/2010
Barry Cowen appointed Sales, Commercial & Operations Manager for Mullingar Greyhound Stadium

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Bord na gCon is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Barry Cowen as Sales, Commercial and Operations Manager at Mullingar Greyhound Stadium with effect from Monday November 8th.
Mr. Cowen has significant business and commercial experience, which will enable Bord na gCon to deliver on its organizational goals. Furthermore Mr. Cowen has deep industry knowledge and his skills and experience will complement the overall management team. Prior to joining Bord na gCon, Mr. Cowen managed a Douglas Newman Goode franchise in the auctioneering sector, and has also formerly worked in the financial services sector.
Bord na gCon CEO Adrian Neilan commented To counter the downturn in consumer spending we have reduced our operational cost by nearly 25% over the past 3 years whilst ensuring strong performance at all levels needs to be delivered. However we now need to put in place plans to grow our revenues. Barry brings significant operational capability which will underpin our operational focus whilst using the combination of local knowledge and business acumen to grow our business in Mullingar. Furthermore the Greyhound Industry in Ireland delivers 11,000 jobs to the country. This is based upon having nearly 14,000 active greyhound owners which supply the crucial product that entertains our many customers. Clearly understanding and knowing their specific needs is a very important skillset that is crucial for my senior management team. Barry has that skillset in abundance and hence will be a very welcome addition to my senior management team.

DECLAN O'HALLORAN MOVING ON FROM LIMERICK STADIUM
02/11/2010
The Irish Greyhound Board wishes to announce that Declan O'Halloran, Sales Operations & Commercial Manager of the New Limerick Greyhound Stadium will be moving on to pursue a new career opportunity in the insurance industry in Cork. Declan has worked with the Irish Greyhound Board on the successful launch of the new 20 million euro facility since July and has been hugely instrumental in the successful launch of the New Limerick Greyhound Stadium.

Declan O Halloran commented "Having worked so closely with so many people on the successful launch of this wonderful new stadium, it is with much regret that I am moving on after what was a short but highly exciting period for the greyhound industry in the mid-west region. The new stadium has been a massive good news story for Limerick from an investment and jobs point of view. When you see a new business with every restaurant seat sold for the month of December it can only mean good news for the region in terms of jobs and suppliers. The Irish Greyhound Board have done Limerick and the region proud with this new facility and I would like to wish the team the very best for the future. Having come from a non-greyhound background it was an incredible experience to meet so many passionate supporters of this great Irish sport and I would look forward to being involved in the sport again in the future."

The New Limerick Greyhound Stadium offers a World Class sport and versatile entertainment venue with a capacity of over 2,000 as well as a substantial 190 seat restaurant, private hospitality suites and gallery bars, all of which are a significant attraction for people in the mid-west region.

The facility houses the new headquarter offices of the Irish Greyhound Board and it will host over 1,200 races a year as well as a myriad of other entertainment events.

Adrian Neilan, CEO of the Irish Greyhound Board commented "We are extremely happy with how the Stadium in Limerick has been launched and delighted with the level of bookings and benefit nights that we are hosting. Currently we have over 3,000 people who will dine with us over the Christmas season and experience the thrill of Greyhound racing which will culminate with the Kerry Agribusiness St. Leger on Dec 18th. Declan has been hugely instrumental is achieving this success and on behalf of my Board I wish to thank him for his very high levels of contribution. We have the basis of a great team who are driving Limerick Greyhound Stadium for future success and we will shortly appoint a new person to work with that team in delivering very significant organizational success.

Barry Cowans appointment to Mullingar is a positive one for I.G.B.
However it is a reflection on the economic times we live in and the necessity to move on to greener pastures even if you are The Taoiseach`s brother.
Best of luck to him on his appointment

Well, speaking as an outsider it looks like a very shrewd appointment to me.

Yes John, it was a very shrewd appointment, especially as this gives the young Cowen a safety net, if not elected he walks straight back in the job!

Taken from Talking Dogs today

"BARRY TAKES LEAVE

Friday, February 4th

Barry Cowen has taken leave from his role as Sales and Operations Manager at Mullingar Track while he fights the election where he is bidding to take the seat vacated by his brother Brian.
Sean Fogarty, the Racing Manager at Longford, is moving in to assist Brian Bell in the running of events at Mullingar track during Barrys absence."

Don't worry people of Mullingar BC's leave of absence will only last another three weeks - then again maybe you should worry !!

Is true that even when he was in his post at Mullingar he continued running a Auctioneering business.
