The Litters in Australia that are "For Sale" on this website, have dropped from a smorgasbord of 176 (when I was selling pups 15 weeks ago in June) to just 78.
For a number of obvious reasons, breeder's are either - A. Running scared due to recent bad publicity. B. Can't bred due to new breed regulations. C. Sky rocketing fee's have made some breeder's second-think. D. Some breeder's maybe sitting back looking for the "Calm at the end of the storm".
What ever the reasons, there will be a domino effect within the industry...come 2 years.
There will be good & bad to come of this.
Some of the good points (I'm sure there's plenty more) - A. Better breeding programs. B. Less wastage. C. A better image for the sport in the long-run.
Some bad points. A. Less Races. B. MAJOR track closures. C. Less revenue.
What ever happens those that believe...are dedicated & honest...loyal & trustworthy within our industry, will shine bright....at the end of the tunnel.
But for the moment while the industry lies idling, that light will gradually start to dim as 2017 approaches.
Hang in there & unite for the good of the sport.
What are breeder's thoughts right now?
Is it - 1. Full steam ahead. 2. Pull the Hand-break on or 3. Good night Irene...?
What recent decision have you made?

We've adopted a "proceed with caution" approach. Thinking this is the most prudent way forward, at least for the immediate future.
I believe the success of the upcoming Auctions (Ipswich, Richmond etc) is critical for the short to medium welfare of our breeding industry. We need to rally behind ideas like this, for all of our sakes.
It's fine in theory to call for and support unity, but not everyone in admin, industry organisations etc are going to be the "right people for the job". We need skilled people - hopefully with excellent negotiation and PR & business skills - to help right the ship.

Lately ive been going thru whelpings to see when certain sires progeny are hitting the tracks or at least break in age and have been quite shocked at some bitches with multiple litters and dismal record for named and race winning progeny perhaps the correction that had to have has happened.I appreciate the current climate and new breeding rules but I think sense has prevailed to a few that breedings not there caper. Statement not aimed at the three above who are in the right caper.

I think you will find the drop is caused by the "commercial breed to sell" have disappeared due to limited buyers in the market place. To sell young pups in the current market it has to be bargain discounted price which obviously has stopped the one's that breed to sell.

Yeah the economy is a tough place to do business at the moment that's for sure.If your bitch hasn't won tab A or run some pretty quick time out of a great producing damline to a legendary sire than keeping most must be in your plans when you breed.Things will swing they always do we as an industry just have to pray the PTB don't hobble us from sharing in the pendulum swing with there regulations and knee jerk decision making.
Well if the administrations wish to take there current approaches to breeding they will have to adjust other areas, such as grading.
There has to be some give with all the take, because all they will achieve with the decline of races is losing their market share with the Totes for money distribution.

It's my belief that our industry will rise again, bigger & better than ever but we may experience declining breeding numbers, see more sires head to China, sire fees & prize money may drop, and obviously fewer tracks to attend & less races. All in the interim to better future. So personally I'm going to keep breeding & hopefully reap the rewards.

If the anti's are the cause, sires to China will be no more.

If the drop in breeding continues it is inevitable that there will be wholesale track closures unless we start having 6 dog fields

For me the handbrake is definitely on and it will probably lead to good night Irene in regards to breeding. I rely on selling some to keep some out of the litter. In the current market it's just not worth it. It's better to let someone else take the risk and I pay peanuts because the pup doesn't sell. If I had a property and could do everything myself then different story I'd breed.
Sad But True
Hopefully things improve in 12 months time but it's definitely wait and see for me.
